In 2014 English based company UK Birth Centres (UKBC) began offering a private antenatal, birth and postnatal service in the Republic of Ireland. They employed experienced midwives and provided a service which was woman-centred and facilitated informed decision making.
The service has grown in the past two years and a division of UKBC, Private Midwives Ireland, has been set up in 2016. Private Midwives Ireland aims to continue providing quality, safe and evidence-based care to women, babies and families in Ireland.
We know that a lot of our Irish clients will want to claim for their care via their insurance so the following information on this page will provide you with answers to some of the questions you are likely to have.
About Private Midwives
Indemnity insurance cover for our midwives is arranged through Private Midwives and proof of same can be provided on request. The level of cover is £10M.
Our midwives are all registered with the midwifery governing body Nurses and Midwives Board of Ireland (NMBI). Midwives are bound by their code of practice at all times.
All employees have yearly performance appraisals. Feedback from clients they have cared for is a large part of that appraisal.
Compliance with continuing education guidelines is expected. Our midwives undertake training over and above that which is normally expected and educational events are held throughout the year to ensure that the skills and knowledge of our midwives is up to date.
All of our midwives attend regular updates in areas such as infant and maternal resuscitation, shoulder dystocia, emergency breech birth etc. This training is provided by skilled midwifery colleagues, obstetricians, paediatricians and other experts.
We are registered with the Care Quality Commission in England – this is the regulatory body that inspects care providers. To be registered we have to have a very robust governance structure which includes external experts to review our clinical outcomes. This ensures our data is accurate and we are an organisation which is safe, caring, effective, well-led and responsive.

“The Care Quality Commission (CQC) are the organisational regulator for all health care providers in the UK.
ALL organisations who employ more than one person, are required by law to be registered, inspected and regulated by the CQC.
This gives YOU, the patient – information about how the service is run, if it is effective, safe, caring and responsive to your needs. It is a safety and quality assurance mechanism.”
We have just had our 2018 report conducted by the CQC - You can read the full report here
‘Women told us that the care they received had exceeded their expectations. We saw many testimonials from women and their families that praised the exceptional care offered.’
‘Staff cared for women with compassion. Women valued their relationships with their midwife and there were several examples where staff had gone the extra mile to support women during home and hospital births.’
‘People could access the service when they needed it. Staff responded quickly to initial enquiries and offered free of charge initial consultations to help women decide if the service was right for them.’
‘The service operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Women were offered flexible appointments that were mutually agreed between the woman and her midwife.’
