How to make your birth special

by Jo Watson / Tuesday, 22 September 2015 / Published in breastfeeding, Home Birth, Labour, Labour & Birth, Midwife, Working with UKBC

It is so important when it comes to birth that you feel safe and relaxed with your midwife, because of the way your hormones operate. Your labour can be slowed and stopped when you are nervous, intimidated or just in a strange unknown setting, as you will be releasing stress hormones which are the very signal to your body to stop labour progressing!

Here at UK Birth Centres we provide individualised care for you throughout pregnancy and birth, allowing time for us to get to know each other and what makes you a unique and amazing person! Many of our midwives have had the privilege of looking after women and their families through several pregnancies and observed that even from baby to baby the experience is unique.

A beach full of sand or even the contents of a child’s sandpit looks uniform, you would expect that as you let the grains fall through your fingers they were all the same but on closer inspection with a microscope we now know they are all different .It is the same with snow, a velvet covering of untouched snow gives the impression that everything is uniform, again when inspecting the individual snowflakes these are all different!

Now with these images in mind, you can see that if you are being cared for by strangers, in a setting where there are large numbers of pregnant women day after day, then it will be hard for the midwives and Doctors to see you as the beautiful individual that you are!!

Why does this matter?

When you are being cared for by a midwife who you have got to know really well, you will be reassured and comforted in their presence and thus labour will be encouraged to progress well. There are a lot of benefits to having your own midwife, less medical interventions and increased normal births.  So for the sake of a better and more satisfying birth outcome, you really deserve to have your own midwife especially if it is your first baby.

One of our midwives has a set of birth beads that she has collected over time, each bead individually donated by a Mother in her care to represent her birth and her baby . This strand of beads is taken to the home of the next mother to be, who places it in a prominent position as a positive reminder of the community of women who have birthed before her cared for and supported by that midwife.

So give us a ring today on 0800 3800 579 and let us help your birth be special.
