Pregnancy for some is an incredible time filled with anticipation, excitement, and a touch of nervousness. It can also be a filled with a vast amount of information and recommendations, these might include choosing where to give birth, navigating screening tests offered to you and nutrition considerations etc. Having all of these options can feel empowering to some, but it may also lead to some feeling uncertainty and anxiety around decision making.
What is the BRAIN Tool?
The BRAIN decision-making tool is a simple and effective framework designed to help you to make informed choices that align with your personal values and preferences. This acronym stands for:
- Benefits: Consider the positive outcomes associated with each option. What are the potential advantages for you and your baby?
- Risks: Weigh the potential downsides of each option. What are the potential risks or complications that may arise?
- Alternatives: Explore other available choices. Are there different approaches or strategies that could yield similar outcomes?
- Intuition: Listen to your inner voice and gut feelings. What does your intuition tell you is the right path to take?
- Nothing: Consider the potential consequences of inaction. What happens if you don’t make a decision at this time?
By using this tool for each option, you can gain clarity and make informed decisions that align with your unique circumstances and preferences. This tool empowers you to become an active participant in your care, fostering a sense of control and confidence throughout your pregnancy journey. While many recommendations from others are well-intentioned, some may not align with your personal preferences or beliefs. In such instances, it’s crucial for you to feel empowered to say no and make informed decisions about your own body and baby.
Our Top Tips for Saying No in Pregnancy
Be clear and direct: Express your wishes clearly and directly to your Midwife. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek clarification if needed.
Educate yourself: Do your own research and gather information about the different options available. This will help you feel more confident in your choices as they were informed. Your midwife can provide you with information from reputable sources.

Discuss with your partner/supporters: Make sure your team around you are aware of your choices so they can advocate for you if you are unable to.
