Free yourself from fear

by Jo Watson / Tuesday, 11 August 2015 / Published in Home Birth, Labour, Labour & Birth

Trust in Birth! This is a mantra that has lost resonance with many because the main stream of Maternity care is given is such a way that shows a lack of trust in your ability to give birth!

The problem with Maternity care that does not trust your body and intervenes with a drug or a surgical alternative is that it prevents the natural mechanisms in your body from working.

For you to give birth your body has a cocktail of hormones that are secreted when the conditions are right and will birth your baby safely. For this to happen you need…

To feel safe. A known care giver who also trusts in the process.

Quiet and darkness……… To be un-inhibited and undisturbed.

To be relaxed .To have no tension building up from fear.

No pressure to perform .Your body does not come with a built in timer!

You can see that being cared for in a much pressurised Maternity system, where there is very little time and The Doctors and Midwives are not able to stay with you giving constant encouragement and support when you need it.

Women also have an instinctive mechanism to “shut down” or slow down labour if they feel frightened about giving birth. This is often why many women experience their labour either stopping or slowing down when they get to hospital.

Long before your birth learn the art of self-hypnosis, a pleasant state of mental relaxation. It is a technique that allows your conscious mind to take a back seat and your subconscious (feelings memories and emotions) to take over. It is whilst in this relaxed state that you are able to approach the sensations of childbirth from two angles.

·         By relaxing deeply you will reduce tension and adrenalin.

·         You use your mind and body in ways that reduce your perceptions that sensations are      over whelming you.

By practicing hypnosis in the lead up to your birth, you are able to “experience” a calm and manageable birth over and over again in your mind. You learn to trust in birth and absorb positive suggestions about your body and believe you can give birth naturally.

Having your own midwife with you who is trained in these techniques and who you have got to know really well will help you achieve the birth you prepare for.
