As I reflect on the recent births I have attended, I am struck by the powerful belief the Mothers had that they could give birth and in each case they did without any intervention and it was a privilege for me to witness this. It was no coincidence though that these births went well let me explain!

Beating the baby blues
You are probably aware that having a baby is going to change your life, and may I add, for the better! However, along with this change comes a multitude of emotions and it is good to have a support network around you to help you get through those early weeks as a new mother.

Skin-to-skin care with the partner
Birth is unique and dynamic, working alongside your midwife you will be planning and preparing for many months towards an ideal birth. Sometimes things can and do change which may mean that you as the mother cannot hold your baby for the first time; this may be in the event of a CS for example. If for any reason you cannot hold your baby for a while, skin to skin can start between baby and your partner –Baby will Settle to the rhythm of his/her breathing and his/her heart beating, it is a voice that baby will recognise immediately and can go a long way to start the instinctual process until you are ready to take over.
