Who We Are

A private company established over 10yrs. We work all over the UK and Republic of Ireland. We employ around 100 midwives. We care for almost 1000 women a year. We are registered with the CQC and we have full clinical indemnity insurance.

Why Work With Us

Almost all of the midwives who work with us have previously worked in NHS or HSE hospitals and left because they felt unsupported, possibly bullied, disheartened, not listened to and blamed when the systems they had to work in failed the women in their care. They often contact us as “broken midwives” on the verge of leaving the profession altogether. For some, caseloading is not the answer – but for others, this new way of working, in a supportive and nurturing company where everyone is listened to and involved, results in them regaining their love for midwifery and their passion to provide excellent, high standards of care.

Most organisations will tell you they care; tell you they look after their staff and “talk-the-talk” about staff welfare being directly linked to client quality and safety of care. However, here at Private Midwives, we really mean it and our feedback from clients, staff and our outcomes all validate this.

Below are a few quotes/results from our 2021 staff survey, which was anonymous so staff could be honest and tell us anything at all:

  • Nothing could be better, the organisation is fantastic
  • We asked if staff could access someone 24/7 for advice, support or to raise concerns. 100% said yes.
  • We asked staff who had been involved in a clinical incident how they felt about the process of the investigation. “I felt supported, I was treated fairly, the focus was on learning, I was listened to, my views were considered”
  • Everyone agreed that the organisation prioritises safety first above all else
  • Private Midwives goes above and beyond to make sure all staff feel cared for and are part of the PM family. I have never been so happy in my role.

Our Client Feedback

Our client feedback is also excellent with numerous lovely comments about how much they appreciate their care and the midwife who shared their experience. We have a 99% recommendation. You can read many of the comments in the parents feedback section or on our social media pages.

Staff Support

We believe that all staff need to be supported. Working in a caseloading model can be isolating at time but we have a huge range of involvement options and support mechanisms:

  • Staff private facebook group – used mainly for training, updates, announcements
  • Staff peer support WhatsApp for peer advise, feedback, information sharing
  • Manager on call 24/7 for advice and support
  • Comprehensive training plan to include mandatory and optional topics
  • Annual equipment calibration checks
  • PMAs available to advise, support and nurture
  • Staff Employee Assistance Scheme – a confidential 24/7 service for all staff and their families. Sign posts to advice on a range of finance, health and well-being topics
  • 24/7 support helpline, confidential counselling and advice
  • Confidential, external, face-to-face counselling sessions for any subject – work or home related
  • All policies available in a handy, portable QR book so you (and your clients) can access them anywhere from your phone and you always have the latest version – you are asked to contribute to the updates of policies so we can be sure they work for you
  • Opportunities to grow, develop and learn new skills such as audit, policy writing, training, case presentations, social media marketing
  • Staff involvement in all decisions, wherever possible
  • Location based team meetings
  • Funded training for NIPE, tongue tie, PMA
  • Comprehensive and supportive governance arrangements to minimise admin for midwives whilst maximising safety and learning
  • Employee rewards – we have a quiz twice a year which is based on learning from events, with good quality prizes for the winders. We have client and peer nominated gifts for “international Day of the Midwife” and various engagements events with prizes throughout the year as our little way of saying “Thank you” and brightening your day.
  • Perinatal, hand-held written notes.
  • Excellent job satisfaction. Be the midwife you want to be. Autonomous, caring, compassionate with the time to devote to the families in your care. Providing care throughout the whole journey and making a real, positive difference

We offer a number of options and opportunities for fantastic midwives to work with us. There are great benefits in working for the one of the largest providers of private midwifery services in the country.

I love being a midwife! I feel very lucky to be invited into people’s lives at such an important time. I aim to provide holistic midwifery care, respecting difference and diversity. I worked in the NHS for many years, including holding specialist midwifery posts in screening and fetal medicine, bereavement care and gestational diabetes. I now work privately to offer real continuity of care in both straightforward and complex pregnancies. I have a special interest in supporting parents in pregnancy after loss and can provide specialist care if there is concern for a baby’s growth or development during the pregnancy. According to the situation I support both home and hospital birth – my main priority is the safety of you and your baby. Two of my three children were born at home and I love facilitating peaceful homebirths. I mainly work in Surrey and Sussex, with a mixture of “normal” and complex pregnancies.

Matron - South East

Kerry Baker

NMC: 14F0688E

Hello, I’m Kerry and I’ve been a registered midwife since 2014. Over the years I’ve worked across all areas of maternity care, but a large part of my career has been dedicated to specialising in homebirth and waterbirth. I’m passionate about providing true continuity of care and supporting families to make informed choices that feel right for them.

I am a qualified hypnobirthing teacher and have also trained in birth massage techniques and the 3 Step Rewind method. As a Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA), I strongly value communication and will always take the time to ensure you feel listened to, respected, and fully informed—so you can feel empowered on your journey to parenthood.

I speak English and have supported many families from a range of cultural backgrounds and belief systems. I have particular experience working with families from the travelling community, North America and Canada, and East Asia. I’ve also cared for clients who are vegan, passionate about climate change, or managing severe allergies.

On a personal note, I live in Suffolk with my husband and a growing collection of house plants. I love nothing more than a good cup of tea and getting stuck into a crochet project (with varying levels of success!).

Midwife & Tongue Tie Practitioner - Ireland

Liz Halliday

NMBI: 122213

I am an experienced midwife and tongue-tie practitioner, passionate about supporting families through the early days of infant care—particularly around feeding. With a strong focus on providing kind, respectful, and individualised support, I help families navigate feeding challenges in a way that honours their choices and values.

Currently, I run clinics and offer home visits to assess and treat tongue-tie in newborns. I take time with every family to ensure they feel informed, supported, and confident in their feeding journey—whether breast, bottle, or combination feeding. My approach is gentle, thorough, and centred on each family’s unique needs.

My midwifery career began in 2006, when I enrolled at Trinity College Dublin as a mature student after having my own children. After working in Ireland’s maternity services, a chance opportunity led me to Private Midwives, where I spent over a decade providing antenatal and postnatal care, supporting home births, and offering in-hospital care to families across the east coast and midlands of Ireland. While I’ve since stepped back from attending births, I continue to support families in the antenatal and postnatal period with the same dedication and compassion.

I am trained in NIPE (Newborn and Infant Physical Examination), offering comprehensive day 2 baby checks, and am fully qualified in Birth Trauma Resolution therapy—a field I’ve been practising in for over four years. This work has deepened my understanding of the emotional and psychological aspects of perinatal care, and I bring this awareness into every part of my practice.

I have a deep passion for informed choice and believe that every family deserves care that is not only clinically sound, but also kind, affirming, and inclusive.

I speak passable French, have lived in many parts of the UK and Ireland, and have travelled widely—experiences that have shaped my interest in cultural sensitivity and diversity. I’m a proud LGBTQ+ ally and have had the privilege of working with many same-sex and gender non-conforming families.

It has been an honour to support hundreds of families over the years—each one has shaped who I am as a midwife and as a person. I look forward to continuing this work, growing in connection, and providing care that supports families to thrive.

Midwife & Tongue Tie - North & Midlands

Sally Goodwin

NMC: 11B0312E

With over 16 years of experience as a midwife, I’ve had the privilege of supporting countless women and families through pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood—predominantly in the home birth setting. After qualifying in March 2011, I’ve worked across hospital, community, and caseload midwifery, gaining a deep appreciation for the value of continuity, informed choice, and personalised care.

I’m a NIPE practitioner, trained in mindful birth and hypnobirthing, and a qualified infant feeding specialist and tongue-tie practitioner. I’m also a Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA), committed to being trauma-informed in all aspects of my care. I believe deeply in the power of kindness, respect, and evidence-based information to help women feel confident and calm.

Choosing to work with me means choosing someone who values your preferences, respects your decisions, and is here to empower you every step of the way. I bring not only a wealth of knowledge, but also a calm, compassionate presence to every interaction – ensuring you feel seen, heard, and supported.

When you work with me, you’re not just receiving midwifery care – you’re building a meaningful relationship with someone who truly cares about your well-being, your birth experience, and the best possible start for your family.

I provide evidence based care and information so that you can make informed decisions, feel empowered and to know that you have choices. Who Are Our Clients?

Most of our clients fall into 2 categories. 1) women who have been traumatised by a previous experience and 2) professional women who want appointments outside of their work schedule. A smaller number are surrogate families, celebrities or international clients. Since the start of the pandemic, we have booked clients who want family centred care with their partners present.

What Services Do We Offer?

We offer a range of services from single appointments to full care packages. We do not offer obstetric care. Antenatal appointments are 1-2hrs in the woman’s home. They are 4 weekly until 28 weeks, then 2 weekly until 36 weeks, then weekly. Appointments include birth education and planning and relaxation. About 70% of our clients currently book a home birth. Our successful home birth rate once a woman commences labour with us is about 85%. Postnatal care is up to 4 weeks typically. We can also offer private scans and private blood tests including GTT at home and NIPT testing.

Caseload

Your caseload size depends on you. Typically, midwives care for 15-25 women a year but some are a little higher. Some midwives are “semi-retired” and do less. You get paid per client you care for if you are on the “pay as you go”, or bank employment basis.
