Midwife - Ireland

Áine Hennessey

NMBI: 130644

My name is Áine and I have been a midwife since 2013. I trained in Trinity College Dublin and I have worked in all areas of midwifery, from antenatal and postnatal, labour wards, theatre and finally landing into home births. I spent time working in the UK and UAE as well as here in Ireland. I have worked as a home birth midwife since 2018. I currently facilitate home births in counties Kildare, West Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny, West Dublin and parts of Meath. I also teach hypnobirthing, baby massage and I became a fully qualified reflexologist in 2021.

My passion lies in physiological birth, empowering women and families to take control of their own pregnancy and birth experience, while offering unwavering support to the best of my abilities. Birth is the most precious time in a woman’s life, and by helping them prepare towards a positive birth experience, while facilitating the transition into motherhood and parenthood, is the most fulfilling and honouring thing to be a part of. I believe every birth has the capacity to be a positive experience, and I cannot wait to help you on your journey to meeting your baby and welcoming them into your family.

Private Midwife Aleanbh Cox

Midwife - Ireland

Aleanbh Cox

NMBI: 125532

Aleanbh Cox is a mother to two beautiful daughters and a registered midwife in Ireland. She trained in Trinity College and The Coombe Women’s and Infants University Hospital Dublin and graduated in 2011. She continued to work in the Coombe after graduation until early 2019.

Since late 2014, she has offered private Hypnobirthing classes to couples in order to prepare them for the birth of their baby. In 2018, she had the opportunity to use everything that she had been teaching in Hypnobirthing classes herself in the birth of her second daughter. And what an amazing experience that was!

Most recently, she completed a Spinning BabiesParent Educator training in Holland, an Antenatal Yoga training in Dublin and a baby massage course.

She is also a volunteer for AIMS Ireland and provides confidential support to women. She does this by reviewing individual women’s case notes and by providing feedback and information to allow women to gain a better understanding of their birth story. Sometimes women have precise questions about why a certain procedure was done or sometimes a review of the case notes helps to ‘fill in the gaps’.

She has joined Private Midwives Ireland in the Dublin area so that she can offer her fellow colleagues and the women they care for additional support during labour and birth of baby.

Anne McNee

NMBI: 125340

My name is Anne & I have 3 daughters, 2 of whom were born at home. I was fascinated by pregnancy & my own home births made me want to enable other women to share that most incredible of experiences. So I returned to college at 39 & became a midwife, always with the aim of working in the community. I worked in the Rotunda for 3 years and then returned to Limerick maternity in 2015.

I currently live in Ennis and run a community midwifery antenatal clinic through the HSE & also work in UMHL in the Labour Ward. I have experience in all aspects of pregnancy care & have worked as a second midwife for the HSE SECMs. I am trained in hypnobirthing & HIPE.

I believe in physiological birth, in choice, in evidence based care, in empowerment, in safety, in positivity. But mostly I believe in women & hope to be able to help facilitate women to believe in themselves. I look forward to being part of this wonderful, amazing journey with you and your family.

Private Midwife Carolyn Coughlan

Midwife - Ireland

Carolyn Coughlan

NMBI: 105339

In 2004, I studied Nursing in University of Limerick and straight after, went on to do my H.dip. in Midwifery in Trinity College, Dublin. There was no direct entry at that time and you had to study nursing first. When I qualified and started on the labour ward of a busy Dublin maternity hospital, it was the culmination of years of hard work.

Being a believer in the the importance of evidence-based practice and wanting to develop my skills to be as useful as I could to women, I went on to study an M.Sc. in Midwifery and later on, a Clinical Midwife Tutor qualification. The more I learned, the more I realised that while hospitals save lives, homebirth is a safe and preferable option for low risk women.

The helpful hormones involved in birthing are oxytocin and endorphins. These are produced by the parasympathetic nervous system and require a state of calm and confidence. Many women would feel more calm and empowered in their own homes rather than in the hospital setting. A surprising number of women are not aware that homebirth is an option and are excited at the prospect when they learn that it is available. It gives me great pleasure to be able to facilitate this service to empower women with more choice in birth.

To make myself as useful as possible and to support mothers to have the joyful experience I knew pregnancy, birth and motherhood could be, I qualified as IBCLC Lactation Consultant, KGHypnobirthing Instructor and a Reflexologist specialising in pre-natal care and fertility.

No two homebirths I have attended are the same, but they all give me such happiness to know that I am supporting women to have the very highest standard of care and to experience birth as joyful, empowering and sublime.

Whatever your choice, know that you have options and I am happy to help you explore these different pathways and find the way that will work best for you.

Hi there, my name is Lena and I qualified as a midwife in 2018. I‘ve worked in hospitals both in Germany and Ireland as well as a self-employed midwife in Germany. While I enjoy every aspect of midwifery I‘ve always felt like being able to work with women in their own homes allows me to give the support they want and need.

I‘m dedicated to empower expecting parents through education and individualised support. It‘s always such a privilege to be welcomed by the families and be part of this special time.

Rachel O’Brien

NMBI: 144312/strong>

Hello, my name is Rachel, I’m a Registered Midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant as well as the proud mum of two beautiful babies. I am dedicated to protecting and promoting physiological birth and breastfeeding. My passion for supporting women and their families on their unique journeys through pregnancy, birth and postpartum began as a Midwife but was truly ignited after my own personal experiences in maternity care and experiencing two very contrasting births, one in hospital and one at home. My homebirth had a profound effect on me and I only wish all birthing women could have the opportunity to experience birth in an empowering and enriching way. No two women or babies are the same which is why I believe it is essential to provide individualised care tailored to the needs and desires of each family. I have an additional interest in Aromatherapy and Hypnosis in pregnancy and birth and received training in these at Expectancy UK in 2019-2021.

Sandra Healy

NMBI: 121154

Hi. I am Sandra and I have worked as a midwife since 2010 and transitioned to homebirth in 2016. I deeply care about how women experience birth and believe choice of birthplace matters. I have 4 grown up children and had the privilege of having my last child at home which inspired me to become a midwife because the experience so empowered me.

I love to teach, and I provide Hypnobrthing classes to families in the Midwest. I also occasionally teach midwifery students and pass on the knowledge that I have gained from some wonderful midwife mentors on my midwifery journey.

I joined Private Midwives Ireland in early 2024 because I want to ensure that the women of Ireland have access to safe, informed and empowered birth experiences with midwives they know and trust.

Midwife - Ireland

Sarah McCann

Hi, I’m Sarah. I trained in the Rotunda and Trinity College Dublin and I qualified in 2011. I am a mum to 4 grown-ups and a hypnobirthing and antenatal education teacher since 2006. Women deserve to know all their options so they can make an informed decision. I am happy to support women and their families in Dublin and surrounding counties.

I also do the ‘Closing of the Bones’ as I think we need to support our mums postnatally much better than how we traditionally support them in Ireland.

I especially relished the opportunity to become well-versed in care during water births, use of complimentary therapies and being a lead-professional in midwifery-led care.
