I met Cheryl when I was 16 weeks pregnant, Covid-19 was becoming serious in the UK and due to some issues in my first pregnancy we wanted to ensure I continued to receive a high level of care throughout this pregnancy, so my husband and I chose private midwives. I can now say this is possibly the best money we have ever spent!
Fast forward to the birth, at 38 weeks I had been in slow labour for a number of days. the hospital were getting concerned that the baby was getting too big and wanted to induce me at 39 weeks. Cheryl was visiting me frequently to preform sweeps to try and avoid an induction. On the 11th of September I took my Mum and Daughter Bella to Chester zoo, after waddling around for several hours my waters broke as I lifted Bella up to see the Buffalo! I phoned Cheryl straight away who advised that I needed to be checked over at the hospital and she would then meet me at home after. I went into the labour ward at 4pm and after a couple of hours of monitoring me they allowed me to go home, by this point my contractions had begun. I was in regular contact with Cheryl and we agreed that she would come to my house once I felt labour was progressing. At around 8pm I had a long bath and then decided to lie in bed to try and get some rest, by 1am I felt my contractions were ramping up so we called Cheryl and she arrived quickly to assess me, and I was at 7cm! She called the hospital to update them and advise that we would be coming in.
Me, Cheryl and my mum arrived at 3am and were taken straight to a private birthing room which was really lovely, unfortunately mine and babies heart rates were elevated so we were then moved onto labour ward so I could be monitored more closely and receive fluids. Cheryl made sure that I was always kept informed of every decision and felt comfortable throughout. Because of this I couldn't have the water birth I had planned, but Cheryl went to the labour ward room first to ensure the lights were dimmed and it was as comfortable as possible. Quickly after we were moved I began to feel the urge to push, Cheryl suggested that I get back onto the bed on all fours leaning over the back which had been elevated, this put baby into a great position and I still can't believe how quickly she was then born compared to my first! Cheryl was so encouraging and supportive during the pushing stage, I felt so empowered. Harper was born at 5.50 am weighing 8lb 2. Due to Covid I was only allowed one birthing partner, so it was arranged that my husband would stay home with Bella whilst I went in with my mum. Luckily baby was healthy so as planned we were able to Leave hospital a couple of hours later so she could finally meet her Daddy in time for breakfast!
Despite me not having the labour I had wanted, my labour was incredibly positive and I don't think that would have been possible without Cheryl. She was always incredibly kind and professional. knowing you're in safe hands at such a vulnerable time really does make all the difference. We will always be grateful that she came into our lives and safely delivered our beautiful baby girl x
