Silence!

Silence

You might think it is odd that I have called this blog “silence” when most people’s idea of birth is anything but silent.  However I am are here to introduce you to a wonderful hormone called the “love Hormone”.  It is produced by the pituitary gland and it is the driving force behind natural birth.

It was when I discovered this thing called the “Love Hormone” that my whole idea about birth changed completely. Understanding this powerful but shy hormone is the key to understanding birth.

Why I call it a shy hormone is because it needs the right conditions to emerge and once you understand this, you will understand why modern obstetric practices actually do not help birthing mothers to progress naturally.

The pituitary gland is at the base of the brain and it secretes the “Love Hormone” in certain circumstances.  Ladies, you will have been secreting it for years and not even known.  For example, when you are making love, this is a brilliant time for your pituitary to kick in to action and pump out these hormones.  Imagine the atmosphere that exists for you and your partner on these occasions. Hopefully you will be feeling uninhibited, there’ll be just the two of you (hopefully), the lighting would be dim or even dark, lots of kissing and touching to put you in the mood, sweet nothings in your ear… you get the picture…

OK I’m going to stop there but do you see what I am getting at?  The same conditions that were present when you conceived your baby should be present when you get to meet your baby.  Ask yourself how well the conception would have gone if you had the following conditions:

  • 14 strangers in the room watching you and taking notes
  • Bright intensive lights
  • You are being timed, someone shouting ‘Come on, hurry up and have an orgasm’.
  • People barging into the room uninvited
  • Your partner side-lined and ignored
  • An IV drip in your arm

There is no way your partner is going to be whispering anything in your ear with that audience!  Do you think you will both still be in the mood?

What I am trying to illustrate is that when the mood is right, the “Love Hormone” flows freely. And in the second scenario which is the scenario for many hospital births, you can bet your life that there isn’t going to be much of the “Love Hormone” knocking around.

This is such important knowledge for all women to grasp so let’s make sure the conditions are right for your birth!
