How will I cope with Labour? Well here is an A to Z of coping strategies that you can use at your birth but many of these will be more effective if you seek a supportive Midwife and remain at home to give birth to your baby.
This is a photograph of an original drawing given to one of my clients by her friend, they had done the exercise together which entailed working alphabetically and recording the resources that empowered them to give birth at home and then the artist incorporated their list into this amazing tree. This picture was then gifted to me and is another of the resources that comes with me to my births and acts as an inspirational focus for my clients.
You can make out that the words reserved for the roots and the trunk of the tree are fundamentally important “freedom to move” and “Vary positions throughout labour”. I have talked before in my blogs about us “Returning to our factory setting” as for a human mammal to give birth physiologically it is assumed that she will be upright and free to move and therefore “in tune with body and breathing” another statement you can find in the roots of the tree.
A Core strength to help you achieve a natural birth is a trust in your own judgement and the use of positive visualisation and these words are entwined around the trunk of the tree symbolising their importance. Look to the bud that will flower at the top of the tree and that represents you, your partner and your new baby, at present a family that has not yet matured and flourished.
Over in the leaves containing the words beginning with p such as peace, patience and positivity there is a leaf containing the word B.R.A.N. and this is a fundamental wisdom for you all to adopt when making any decisions.
B is for the benefits that this intervention will bring
R stands for the risks associated with the intervention
A reminds us to look for alternatives to the intervention
N is saying what if we do nothing and just wait and see.
I love looking at this original piece of art and hope it brings you some inspiration!
